In a thrilling conclusion to the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Cup 2024, Vietnam clinched their third championship title with a stunning 3-2 victory over Thailand in the second leg of the final held at Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok, on January 5, 2025. This win, following a 2-1 first-leg triumph, gave Vietnam a 5-3 aggregate score, securing the championship.

Vietnam’s strategy and resilience shone through despite losing star striker Nguyen Xuan Son to injury in the first half. The match turned when Thailand’s Weerathep Pomphan was sent off, giving Vietnam a numerical advantage. Pham Tuan Hai and Nguyen Hai Long scored crucial goals in the latter stages, with Hai Long’s long-range shot sealing the victory in stoppage time.

Coach Kim Sang Sik’s leadership was pivotal, as he managed to keep the team’s morale high even after losing a key player. Celebrations erupted across Vietnam, with fans taking to the streets in jubilation.
